Huntington YMCA History
The Huntington YMCA was first launched in 1885 when we rented rooms in the Palmer Building on Third Avenue and Ninth Street. In 1917, the first attempt at securing land and erecting a building was made under the leadership of C.S. Campbell.
In the spring of 1929, under the leadership of Board President V. D. Clark, money for the structure on Sixth Avenue and Eleventh Street was raised, and in June, 1931 this building was partially completed and dedicated.
In 1953, E. P. May donated the current YMCA May Building 935 10th Avenue. In 1980 the Huntington YMCA leased the Glenbrier Country Club and redirected its use toward outdoor recreation, stressing youth and family programming.
In 1991, the YMCA purchased 40 of the 80 acres at the Glenbrier and continued the development of a soccer complex and outdoor recreation center.
In 1999, the YMCA purchased the remaining 40 acres through a grant from the Cobb Foundation and renamed the facility; the Dan T. Kennedy YMCA Family Outdoor Recreation Center, in memory of Dan Kennedy a YMCA Board Member.
Also in 1999, the YMCA Youth Building, in an effort to meet our expanding needs, moved to the old Huntington High School and began renovating the facility. In was completed in 2001 and the youth and senior programs were relocated from the Sixth Avenue YMCA to the Huntington High YMCA.
In September of 2001 the YMCA May Building opened the warm water pool, which allowed the May Building to have a warm and cool water pool.
